From Jenny (USA)

All the kids in our family love this game. It's easy and fun to make. But its best feature is its adaptability to each child's interests, simply by changing the fortunes and the labels on the flaps. For instance, teens might like pictures of their favorite movie stars, movies, TV shows or activities. And the fortunes could relate to dating or shopping, etc.

You and your family can have fun with fortune telling. Just follow these steps and you will be Houdini.

Materials:

  • square piece of paper (9-inch square works well)
  • colored markers
Directions:
  1. Fold corner A to corner C, crease, open. Fold corner B to corner D, crease, open.
  2. Fold corners A,B,C,D to the center of the square where the creases meet.
  3. Turn paper over, fold each corner A,B,C,D to the center and crease.
  4. Fold in half, crease edge, open, fold in half the other way to crease edge which will allow the fortune teller to bend on those creases.
  5. Take a colored marker and write a different number on each of the eight small triangles using the numbers 1 thru 8. Next, open each of the flaps as shown and write a different fortune in all eight triangles.
  6. Fold the flaps in so you see the numbers and then turn the paper over. Take colored markers and write the name of a different color on each of the 4 flaps.
  7. Place your fingers under the flaps and hold the fortune teller. (The 4 colors will be showing).

How to Use the Fortune Teller:

  1. With the fortune teller in your hands as shown, ask a friend to choose a color shown on top of the fortune teller.
  2. Open and close the fortune teller in alternating directions as you spell out the name of the color and stop.
  3. Next, have your friend choose a number that is shown as they look inside the fortune teller.
  4. Open and close the fortune teller as you count to their chosen number and stop.
  5. With the fortune teller open, have your friend choose a final number.
  6. Lift the flap and read their fortune. The great Houdini has spoken.
