Materials:

  • One clean, plastic 16 or 20 oz bottle with cap. (Soda or water bottles work well.)
  • Food coloring
  • Cooking oil
  • White glue
  • Funnel
  • Optional extras: Glitter, sequins, rhinestones, beads, small plastic or metal trinkets.
Directions:

Fill bottle half way with water. Add 2-3 drops of food coloring. Screw on cap and shake to mix coloring. Do not make water too dark. You will not see the trinkets you add.
Remove cap and put in any optional extras mentioned above that you would like. A teaspoon of glitter gives a really nice sparkling effect. Use funnel and carefully fill the rest of the bottle with cooking oil, leaving a little space at the top.
Put glue around the sides of the inside of the bottle cap and screw into place. Once cap is securely in place, gently turn upside down a couple of times for a lava lamp effect. Turning or shaking the bottle in different ways will give you different effects. Have fun, experiment and see how many different looks you can get.
