If you have to plan team 'competition' for company or family picnics, here are a few that kids love, and adults enjoy them too.

Materials:

  • A bunch of people.

Centipede Race:
Make two teams of about 6 or 8 players. They should be evenly balanced for size, age, etc. You can mix adults and kids, but they should have the same number of each per side. Each group stands in a line behind the leader. Every player puts his hands on the shoulders of the person in front. Then they all crouch down to form two lines, and let the race begin! The leader can't go too fast, or the line will fall apart.

Blanket Beachball:
Hold out a beach blanket with two teams holding onto opposite sides. Put a beachball in the middle of the blanket. Both sides raise and lower the blanket to try to get the ball to roll off on the other teams side.

Tundra Tag:
The player who is "it" chases after other players and when they get tagged, they have to stand "frozen" in place. The frozen players can only be unfrozen if a free player touches them. When only one free person is left, that person is "it."

Togetherness Tag:
This is a real team event. Two players hold hands and they are "it." They must chase after free players and when they catch one, that person holds hands with the group and becomes part of the "it" group. Only players on the end can tag players, because only their hands are free. A free player can be safe from the tag team by hugging another free player. Then the huggers must count to fifteen and stop hugging. A free player can hug any other player he/she hasn't already hugged. The game starts over when the last two people are free.
