Julie Shields Julie Shields

Julie Shields is the author of How To Avoid The Mommy Trap: A Roadmap For Sharing Parenting and Making It Work (Capital Books, August 2002). She interviewed marital counselors, childcare workers, employers, negotiation, child-development and work-life experts and lots of parents to find out how to create a balanced family effort. Susan Estrich describes "The Mommy Trap" as "what every working mother—and father—needs to know to avoid finding themselves on a dead end road to frustration...a clear and concise roadmap to the future of modern families."

Shields is an intellectual-property attorney who has successfully negotiated many flexible work arrangements. She shares parenting and household responsibilities with her husband, who also works flexibly. Her articles and essays have appeared in a number of publications, and she has written two legal textbooks. Shields and her husband, Ed Peartree, live in McLean, Virginia with their two daughters, Elizabeth and Annie.
