There are four important things women can do to help better understand gynecologic cancer and to help reduce your risk of developing the disease:
What is gynecologic cancer?
Gynecologic cancer is an uncontrolled growth and spread of abnormal cells in the uterus, ovaries, cervix, fallopian tubes, vagina or vulva.
Can gynecologic cancer be prevented?
Diet, exercise and lifestyle choices play a significant role in the prevention of cancer. Additionally, knowing your family history can increase your chance of early diagnosis and can help you take action toward prevention. Screening and self-examinations, conducted regularly, can result in the detection of certain types of gynecologic cancers in their earlier stages, when treatment is more likely to be successful and a complete cure is a reality.
Who is at risk for gynecologic cancer?
Any woman is at risk. Some women are at higher risk based on controllable risk factors such as diet, exercise and lifestyle choices. Some women are at higher risk because of factors they cannot control such as family history, age or race.
